James O-L and the Villains perform a unique blend of broken post-folk-rock with introspective lyrics concerning universal issues of love, death and other cliched paradoxes that we will all face in some form during our limited human existence.
Since the breakup of his former speed punk group, Lennigan, James has been quietly releasing albums in his hometown of Windsor, Ontario. Taking influences from a diverse range of genres, from folk to country to blues to punk rock, James O-L and the Villains have earned a reputation as a powerful live act and have gained a strong local following. Their style has been compared to the work of such artists as Neil Young, Elliott Smith, Pavement, Hayden and The Weakerthans.
This musical project has been ongoing for many years in many different incarnations. Former band members include longtime bassist Mike Balvert and drummer Matt Hewer. During the period when the albums 'The Invisible Album' and 'This Machine Ills' were released, the band was known as James O-L and the Famous Last Words.
Beginning as a solo experiment in genre exploration James moved on to more organic and stripped-down folk arrangements for the lo-fi concept album 'The Invisible Album.'
The next album, 'This Machine Ills', was a experimental change in direction featuring more eclectic song structures and varied recording styles. The genres ranged from minimalist folk to space-rock to instrumental folk-punk.
'The History of Sex' featured five songs that took over a year to record. The music on this record was, like 'The Invisible Album' an attempt to find a balanced and cohesive sound. Every song on the record was meant to fit with the others thematically and sonically.
2010 marked the release of James O-L and the Villains’ fifth album, Alive at the Coch!. This album is a collection of live performances of older and newer material and includes some sections of instrumental improvisation, which has become a staples of their live show.
James O-L and the Villains are currently working on promoting their new album as well as planning their third national tour for summer 2010.
